Chapter 12

Dodo tossed and turned in her bed at Chadwick Hall, her conscience howling, her mind racing with confusion. Her insides were a riot of mixed emotions. Try as she might she could not shut off her brain as it continually contrasted the two men.

Just when she felt like she had a handle on her feelings for Charlie, the chief inspector had confused her. Why did he have the power to rattle her, so? It was infuriating.

He was infuriating.

But that touch. The heat.

She had never felt such charged stirrings from being close to Charlie.

But it was absurd.

The chief inspector was too old, too grumpy, and most importantly, they were from different sides of the tracks. In fact, they were from different sides of the planet. The universe!

She didn’t even like him.

Finally dropping into a fitful sleep, she awoke a few hours later in a foul mood, the sheets thrashed and threaded through her legs.

She punched her pillow to within an inch of its life in frustration. It was time to forget the agitation of yesterday and focus all her energies on Charlie.

Dear, loveable Charlie.

Dodo somehow managed to get dressed in a long, blue, bias-cut skirt and simple poplin blouse. She barely spoke to the maid. Then she dragged her weary body into breakfast to find Charlie full of morning sunshine.

“Hello, beautiful!”

Charlie is here and he is my social equal. Weighed down with fatigue, she lifted a smile as anemic as weak tea.

He lifted the lid of one silver warmer to reveal fluffy, yellow eggs. Lack of sleep and heavy food did not mix, and her stomach turned unpleasantly. Groaning, she shook her head. “I’ll just take some toast and tea, thank you.”

Charlie shrugged and rolled his shoulders.

“Alistair called last night while we were out,” he began. “Wants me to telephone him this morning.”

When Dodo had eaten, she felt her spirits improve. She followed Charlie to the telephone cabinet and they both squeezed into the tiny closet that was designed for just one person.

When the call was put through to Alistair, Charlie beckoned to Dodo who pressed her cheek close to his so that they could both hear what was being said.

“Alistair, it’s Charlie.”

“Charlie. Thanks for calling back. Look, I’ve been wrestling with a bit of a guilty conscience.”

Me too!

Charlie’s mouth pulled down and a crease appeared at the top of his nose. It was adorable.

“Guilty conscience?”

Dodo and Charlie stared at each other in disbelief.

“Yes, I saw something the day of the murder that I didn’t tell the chief inspector.”

Dodo arched a finely plucked eyebrow.

“Go on,” said Charlie.

“I didn’t say anything as I didn’t want to get anyone in trouble, and I am absolutely positive they had nothing to do with the murder…but the remorse is eating me alive.”

“You’ll feel better once you tell someone, old chap,” Charlie encouraged him.

There was a pause. Dodo gripped Charlie’s arm wondering what on earth Alistair was going to say. But Alistair was clearly having second thoughts.

“I suppose I want your advice as to whether it’s something I should tell Chief Inspector Blood.
